In this book we consider how informal care and care relationships are critical to individual and social well-being. Put simply, care combines psychological and physical forms of concern, anxiety and labour. It is within the context of care relationships that ongoing and mutual dependency is most evident but, often, least visible. At different points in our lives we receive or offer care and experience inter-dependencies. Over 7 chapters we consider themes such as living with care, learning to care, working and caring and the implications for future research, policy and practice. A number of devices are used to bring issues to life, including geographical zones, people scenarios and storytelling.

Part of the Issues in Society Series - Series Editor: Tim May
An exciting new addition to the series, this book tackles assumptions surrounding the family as a changing institution and supposed haven from the public sphere of life. It considers families and social change in terms of concepts of power, inequality, gender, generations, sexuality and ethnicity. Some commentators suggest the family is threatened by increasing economic and social uncertainties and an enhanced focus upon the individual. This book provides a resume of these debates, as well as a critical review of the theories of family and social change.

The changing nature of families, their enduring and multi-faceted significance in society, and their value as a focus for the exploration of social change have ensured that families have remained a prominent focus of academic enquiry. Acknowledging the increasing diversity and complexity of families, this innovative book proposes a new conceptual framework for understanding families and other relationships that both challenges and attempts to reconcile traditional and contemporary approaches.

Interest in the sociological study of the body has increased dramatically in the 1990s. This book builds on this work by bringing together theory and research which examines the social and cultural processes involved in the construction of gendered bodies and sexual practices. Contributors explore these issues in a variety of settings ranging from the workplace and leisure industry to the social regulation of medicine.
