A brief introduction to Linda Mckie

About Professor Linda McKie

Research Professor in Sociology, Glasgow Caledonian University

In 1989 I graduated from the University of Durham, with a Ph.D. in Sociology. Before joining Glasgow Caledonian University in 1999 as Research Professor, I worked as a Senior Lecturer in the Sociology of Health and Illness at the University of Aberdeen, Department of General Practice and Primary Care.

During my career I've also spent two periods of employment in the Civil Service; as a Senior Executive Office in the Inland Revenue and Head of Intelligence at the Equal Opportunities Commission.

In addition to experience in research, teaching and supervision, below is a resume of key skills and achievements in management and leadership, research into policy and practice, and finance and planning.

Management and Leadership

  • Undertaken 20 research projects on number of topics
  • All projects awarded through peer review
  • Led 17 of these from application, delivery to final report and dissemination to varied audiences
  • Forged a range of multi-disciplinary teams, including academics, policy-makers, practitioners and users of services
  • Negotiated and worked with funders including UK Research Councils, EU Social Fund and Frameworks, Government Departments and Third Sector bodies
  • Led submissions on behalf of GCU to the UK Research Assessment Exercise, Sociology Unit of Assessment in 2001 and 2007
  • Led Sociology Research Group at GCU from 1999 and at University of Aberdeen co-convened the Primary Care Research Group 1996-8
  • Range of committee work in Universities and Learned Societies, including chairing Research, Finance and Equalities committees
  • Mentored career development for 23 Research Fellows, 12 successful Ph.D. students and 4 Administrators, in addition to general advice to colleagues

Recent research into Policy and Practice

Organisations, work and care

Worked with a range of private sector organisations and academic colleagues to develop a 'tool kit' for human resource managers to proof policies and practices written range of briefing papers and information sheets on care poicies and practices. An on-line version of toolkit is available at www.organisationsworkandcare.org

Violence and violation

Development of resources on supporting the process of disclosing domestic violence in General Practice. Chaired multi-agency group. Resources piloted and subsequently circulated to all practices and Accident and Emergency departments in Scotland

Monitoring and Evaluation

Led the development of The Evaluation Journey, a resource pack for those with no prior experience of research or evaluation The Scottish Executive funded this development and the publication of 4,000 copies. An online version is available on www.ashscotland.org.uk. Work continues through Third Sector work with Evaluation Support Scotland. Advisor to Lloyds TSB Foundation on project findings into practice for services to support families experiencing the impacts of substance mis-use.

Finance and Planning

  • Across 20 projects have raised and managed grants totalling £2m
  • Established governance and financial planning systems for grants
  • Worked as elected treasurer for 2 charities: British Sociological Association and Evaluation Support Scotland.
  • In Third Sector work have worked to re-structure staffing, policies and procedures at point of financial constraints
  • Negotiated and worked with auditors, accounts and financial and planning staff in universities, Third and private sectors
  • Scheduled and monitored work across projects and units to ensure delivery on time and to specification.
